The Host

Written and Directed by BONG Joon-ho, Release date: 8 March 2007.

The talk of the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival and the latest film from critically acclaimed visionary director BONG Joon-ho, THE HOST has already garnered a substantial amount of international buzz. Utilizing state-of-the-art special effects, courtesy of a creative partnership between Weta Workshop (King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) and The Orphanage (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sin City), THE HOST is both a creature-feature thrill ride and a poignant human drama.

Gang-du (SONG Kang-ho) works at a food-stand on the banks of the Han River. Dozing on the job, he is awakened by his daughter, Hyun-seo ( KO A-sung), who is angry with him for missing a teacher-parent meeting at school. As Gang-du walks out to the riverbank with a delivery, he notices that a large crowd of people have gathered, taking pictures and talking about something hanging from the Han River Bridge. The otherwise idyllic landscape turns suddenly to bedlam, when a terrifying creature climbs up onto the riverbank and begins to crush and eat people. Gang-du and his daughter run for their lives, but suddenly the being grabs Hyun-seo and disappears back into the river. The government announces that the monstrous thing apparently is the Host of an unidentified virus. Having feared the worst, Gang-du receives a phone call from his daughter who is frightened, but very much alive. Gang-du soon makes plans to infiltrate the forbidden zone near the Han River to rescue his daughter from the clutches of the horrifying Host…

Theme: CLOSER TOGETHER
The rhetoric of global culture tells us that we are being brought closer and closer together. By media, communication technologies, the free market and other snappy buzzwords which signify somewhat less transparent systems. But how close are we, and how much do we really know about each other?

Virutal Artist in residenc in Second Life

Ars Virtua Artist-in-Residence (AVAIR): Call for Proposals
http://www.arsvirtua.com/residence.html
Deadline: April 7, 2007

Ars Virtua Gallery and New Media Center in Second Life (http://www.arsvirtua.com) is soliciting proposals for its second artist-in-residence program. Established and emerging artists will work
within the 3D rendered environment of Second Life. The 11-week residency will culminate in an exhibition and a community-based event. Residents will also receive a $400 stipend, training and mentorship as necessary.

Ars Virtua Artist-in-Residence (AVAIR) is an extended performance that examines what it means to reside in a place that has no physical location.
Ars Virtua presents artists with a radical alternative to "real life" galleries: 1) Since it does not physically exist artists are not limited by physics, material budgets, building codes or landlords. Their only constraints are social conventions and (malleable-extensible) software. 2)
The gallery is accessible 24 hours a day to an unlimited number of people in every part of the world simultaneously. 3) Because of the ever evolving, flexible nature of Second Life the "audience" is a far less predictable variable than one might find a Real Life gallery. Residents will be encouraged to explore, experiment with and challenge traditional conventions of art making and distribution, value and the art market, artist and audience, space and place.

Application Process: Artists are encouraged to log in to Second Life and create an avatar BEFORE applying. Finalists will be contacted for an interview. Interviews will take place in world in April. Applications will be judged based on ideas presented and work executed. We are looking for an artist who is willing to work within what may be a new environment for them and to be prepared to evolve in response to the synthetic world of Second Life. To apply send the following information to avair-at-arsvirtua.com:

1) Name, address, phone number, email, second life name.
2) Link to an online portfolio (expect a 5 minute visit) and a 500 word (two page) proposal. If you do not have an online portfolio please briefly discuss your work.

"AVAIR" is a 2006-2007 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc., (aka Ether-Ore) for its Turbulence web site. It was made possible with funding from the Jerome Foundation.

ARTS INNOVATION RESIDENCIES (AIR) 2007

The Arts Victoria AIR program, managed by ANAT, is an initiative aiming to support creative partnerships between scientists, researchers and artists, science, industry and art organisations in Victoria. These residencies provide the opportunity for artists to work with key areas of ongoing

Artists participating in each Residency will receive an artists fee of $800
per week for 12 weeks as well as accommodation, a living away allowance and return travel to the destination of the residency if applicable. The science organisations will provide the artist with access to personnel, equipment, space, resources, and some costs towards materials and a public outcome.

These residencies are available to Victorian artists with experience in hybrid arts practice and an interest in science. The focus of AIR program is on collaboration, research and development, articulating and evaluating potential benefits, and on possible public outcomes including DVD
