--Kalakuta --

Thursday 12th July @ Horse Bazaar

As Afrobeat continues to explore the sounds of a mashed down funk, sprinkled with jazz, spiced up with West African traditional music and makes everyone take to the dancefloor with a vengeance, Kalakuta continues the monthly exploration of the music that Fela Kuti created and loved. Names like Antibilas, Koloko, Femi Kuti and Afrobeat Down are just some o the luminaries that keep the music alive and Johnny Topper & Declan Kelly spin it all down and deliver with lashings of African funk and soul.

Dont miss out on some heavy percussion, big guitar riffs and a screaming sax that can transport you to other worlds.

--Visionary Images: A-Lure project--

Visionary Images is calling for aspiring actors and interesting characters to appear in an exciting photoshoot/artwork. The photoshoot will restage a contemporary update of “The Banquet of Cleopatra”, an 18th Century painting by Tiepolo. Like Tiepolo's painting, our photograph will explore issues of consumption, excess and class divisions. The photograph that results from this shoot will be outputted as a large-scale lightbox to be exhibited as part of Visionary Images' A-LURE Project in April 2008. Our cast of characters will include people such as David Beckham, Paris Hilton, Donald Trump, Margaret Thatcher and Elvis. We are looking to cast a diverse range of ages and looks for the one-day shoot (with the possibility of an extra day re-shoot) that will take place on a Saturday or Sunday in early September. These are voluntary positions, but Visionary Images will provide delicious catering for the day and an A4 colour copy of the final photograph to each volunteer.

If you or anyone you know is interested in participating in this photoshoot, we ask for a recent headshot, contact details, dress size information, height, age and availability to be forwarded by email or post to the addresses below.

Week One: A Weekend in the Country: A History of the Meredith Music Festival
(Dir. Rob McCafferty, Produced/Edited Beau McCafferty)

Free Entry

From 1991 to 2005, the annual Meredith Music Festival has grown from a small party in rural Victoria into one of the most unique and beloved music festivals in the world.

"A Weekend In The Country" tells the amazing story of the Meredith Music Festival, a music festival like no other.
Narrated by the festival organisers and Jack and Mary Nolan (the farming couple who own the land) the documentary uses archival footage drawn from home videos, film crews, personal photos, TV footage, and super 8 diaries to show how the festival took on a life of its own and grew over the past 15 years.
At the heart of the documentary is the story of festival co-founder Chris Nolan, who suffered a tragic illness and a life change in the late Nineties.
Chris' spirit, the punters, electrical storms, great music, legends past and present, Tai Chi, and the World Famous Meredith Gift all come together to tell this unique story

--Loony Tunes--

Loony Tunes - Wed 18th july @ North Bazaar

Loony Tunes returns to North Bazaar after a great opening night last month!

This month we have a focus on CGI based animation with a healthy hand drawn program for balance.
Unusual & striking CGI shorts come from Tomek Baginski and we also have Mingo The Clown - the animator community's acidic response to Bingo The Clown. There's a good collection of PRIX ARS winners from the last 2 years and great stop motion from Peter Cornwell & Ishu Patel.
The drawn section delves into surreal-sexual cowboy movies, Bukowski poems and another cut from the perspective master - Georges Schwizgebel. The 30 min surreal Japanese film "Cat Soup" will be our mini feature with brand new soundtrack.
All this happens on Wed July 18th from 8pm-11pm sharp, at North Bazaar, 222 High Street Northcote. Free Entry,

There is free pizza in the early stages of the evening (very nice it was too) and jugs of Coopers are $10.

Your host and soundtrack alterer is DJ Delay.

See you there!

Cashback started its life as an oscar nominated short.

About the film:
When art student Ben Willis is dumped by his girlfriend Suzy, he develops insomnia. To pass the long hours of the night, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket. There he meets a colorful cast of characters, all of whom have their own 'art' in dealing with the boredom of an eight-hour-shift. Ben's art is that he imagines himself stopping time. This way, he can appreciate the artistic beauty of the frozen world and the people inside it - especially Sharon, the quiet checkout girl, who perhaps holds the answer to solving the problem of Ben's insomnia.
