Happy spring/summer everyone - the sun is shining as i write this and it feels good. As we gear up for more fine summer weather, Horse Bazaar has lots of exciting happenings on the boil, and once again some movie tickets to give away courtesy of Madman.

The Digital Fringe festival was a rip roaring success again this year. We received over 700 entries from all over the globe and they were screened in over 50 sites all around Melbourne. We'd like to extend a big thanks to all involved - artists, producers, MPU crews, outposters, volunteer helpers, venues, and of course those who enjoyed, ignored or hated the works where'er they stumbled upon them. If anyone has any feedback please don't hesitate to send it our way info@digitalfringe.com.au The MPU is gearing up for some pre-election interventions and shenanigans before Nov 24th - we want to play our part in the shaping of Australian political history - dont forget to play yours. And come and join us at North Bazaar for an election night extravaganza as we celebrate or commiserate the night away, depending on your persuasion.

In other news, the Horse featured in the most excellent ABC doco - Not Quite Art, which screened recently. Not Quite Art describes itself as the art show that believes there is life outside the galleries. Host Marcus Westbury, founder of the This is Not Art Festival in Newcastle and the former director of Next Wave Festival in Melbourne, investigates various artistic expressions- posing the question of whether these new forms of ‘art’ can legitimately be called art.

We were included in the 3rd episode. The series is well worth a look - you can still check it out online at - http://www.abc.net.au/tv/notquiteart/ But hurry up cos it want stay up there for long.

Other Digital bits n bytes about town

Interlink Exhibition: Smith and Gertrude streets shops and venues
Art, food and music can all connect people on a deep soul level and shop owners, restaurateurs and disadvantaged young people from the inner city are getting together to prove it.

A vibrant collection of painting, digital art, sculpture and music called INTERLINK and made on the theme of community connection will be on display in shops, cafes and salons in the lively Smith and Gertrude Streets shopping precinct during early November.
“These artists are making work about how it feels to be on the outside trying to get accepted into the community and that is something that we all feel at times in our lives, just like we get hungry and thirsty,” said Anthony Sergent, proprietor of La Niche Café on Smith Street.

Young artists from the Artful Dodgers Studios in Collingwood have created work that is all about building and strengthening connections and relationships in the sometimes strange seeming streets around them.

Federation Bells
The City of Melbourne has launched a new website allowing people from anywhere in the world to compose music for Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr, and submit their tunes over the internet for public performance. Federation Bells are a permanent iconic public art installation comprising 39 upturned bells which are struck by computer controlled hammers and programmed to play musical software compositions.

Website users simply drag and drop individual bells onto a timeline, playback, and adjust the melody accordingly. For the more musically-minded, there is also detailed information on the tuning of the bells, and the ability to work with multiple tracks.

Tell No One

Madman have just released a wonderful French thriller called TELL NO ONE, based on the best selling book, on 8th November, and we have a bunch of tickets to give away again. Email people@horsebazaar.com.au with FREE MOVIE TIX in the subject details and provide your contact details. The film has won numerous Cesar Awards (French Oscars) and has done very well in the UK too.

About the film:
Paediatrician Alex (Francois Cluzet), devastated since his wife Margot was savagely murdered in the early days of their marriage eight years before, receives an anonymous email. When he clicks on the link indicated he sees a woman’s face standing in a crowd, being filmed in real time. It’s Margot’s face – is she still alive? And why does she instruct him to tell no one? So many questions that our hero will not have time to consider, he barely even has time to raise the lid of this pandora’s box before the police reopen the case. And eight years down the line the cops are determined to nail him for his wife’s murder.

CCau Music Industry Forum

And finally, Incase anyone is in Brisbane at the end of the month and interested licensing issues:

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovationand Creative Commons Australia are pleased to invite you to the CCau Music Industry Forum.
http://www.cci.edu.au
http://creativecommons.org.au

The forum, which will be run as a part of Apple University Consortium’s Create World 2007 conference, is designed to provide a forum for the discussion of issues surrounding music licensing in Australia. It will take place from 2.00 till 4.00pm on Wednesday 28 November 2007 at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane.

The digital environment presents new opportunities for musicians and new business models for the distribution and promotion of music. Creative Commons has gained considerable favour with content producers world-wide, but the legalities and practicalities of releasing music under these licences can be complicated, particularly when combining them with other licensing models (for further information visit www.creativecommons.org.au/musicinfo).

The CCau Music Industry Forum aims to bring together industry representatives and interested parties to discuss issues such as:

• potential online distribution models for musicians and the music industry,
• compatibility issues with current collective licensing schemes; and
• legal and practical issues relating to the use of Creative Commons licences by Australian songwriters, composers and musicians.

The forum also aims to gather feedback regarding the current understanding of and attitudes towards copyright, open content licensing and Creative Commons within the Australian music industry whilst providing an opportunity for key music industry personnel in to learn more about these topics.

Creative Commons Australia is the Australian arm of the international Creative Commons project, a non-profit organisation that aims to promote flexible copyright options for creators. At the core of the Creative Commons projects is a suite of licences, freely available to creators, that foster sharing and collaboration. Creative Commons builds upon the “all rights reserved” or traditional copyright to create a voluntary “some rights reserved” system.

As you are currently involved or interested in the licensing of musical works we would very much appreciate your participation in this forum. Afternoon tea will be provided. Please RSVP by Friday 23 November 2007.

Please find attached a flyer providing the more details of the forum. For further information, please contact Elliott Bledsoe at elliott@creativecommons.org.au or (07) 3138 9597 or Jessica Coates jessica@creativecommons.org.au or you can phone us on (07) 3138 8301
